Today’s tuition and living expenses give new meaning to the words struggling student.

An undergraduate student can expect to pay in the neighbourhood of $7,500 each year for tuition, books and fees. For those away from home, tack on another $10,000 in living expenses. That’s $70,000 over the course of a four-year degree program, and post-graduate education can run as high as $36,000 for school alone.

Sure, it’s an investment in the future. But when you’re twenty-something, it can also be a heavy load in the face of enormous academic pressure. Established by the Okanagan Chapter of the UBC Alumni Association, the Alumni Endowment Fund will be used for bursaries and financial awards to deserving UBC Okanagan students. It must reach the $20,000 markto do that.

Bursaries are financial gifts that assist students with the expenses they incur while pursuing their studies. Financial need is the primary consideration in the selection of bursary recipients.

Financial awards can have a significant impact in the lives of students, allowing them the freedom to focus on school, to volunteer for extracurricular activities and to pursue work studies. Awards give students more than a financial boost – they instill confidence and pride while providing encouragement and a push to succeed. They help to make an education all that it can be.

Even if you never had a student loan, it’s very likely you know someone who did, or does. Bursaries and financial awards provide welcome relief.

Now there’s a way for alumni to bring that relief to UBC students right here in the Okanagan. We’ll move them one step closer to their goals and dreams, benefiting not just them but the communities in which they will one day live and work.
