Dedicated to raising bursary money for later-year students, the Okanagan Alumni Endowment Fund Gala is an annual event that offers a chance to connect with fellow alumni and friends while at the same time supporting your community.
Richard Hooper, MD'68
Born in Vancouver, Richard (Dick) Hooper graduated in 1961 from Churchill High School, making UBC a natural choice for post-secondary education. He was admitted to UBC's medical program after a short three years as an undergraduate, and emerged an MD in 1968, second only in his class to John Cairns, later be Dean of the UBC Medical School from 1996 to 2003.
Following graduation, Dick took on extensive residencies at McGill University: hematology, pediatrics, internal medicine and cardiology. He spent two years working with the University of Edinburgh to move Nairobi's first school of medicine forward before taking on the role of McGill's chief resident in 1974.
The Okanagan Alumni Community Builder Award honours outstanding Okanagan alumni who have made and continue to make a difference locally, regionally and/or globally. Each year, the Endowment Fund Gala provides the backdrop for a tribute to one individual who has made extraordinary contributions to - while at the same time linking the University more closely with - the greater community.
Chosen by the Okanagan Alumni Chapter Committee, the award recipient is someone who sets an example of building community and who, through professional and volunteer activity, demonstrates UBC's values and vision of civil society, sustainability and global responsibility.
