Teacher of the Year (Kelowna Daily Courier -- June 24, 2008)
By Don Plant
Kimberly Billinton was one proud – and modest – pizza eater on Monday.
The Grade 5 student at Chief Tomat Elementary School was easily the most popular student in her class after learning she penned the winning letter in this year‘s Catherine Haldane Teacher of the Year contest.
Kimberly‘s heartfelt tribute to teacher Amy Van Buren won over judges at The Daily Courier and earned her class a surprise pizza party. But any accolades directed at Kimberly were quickly deflected to the one who inspired her.
“I was shocked,” she said. “Of all those 80 people (who wrote tributes), they picked my letter. It‘s excellent, and I‘m happy for Miss Van Buren because she really deserves it.”
