2008 Olympic gold medalist
Ben grew up in Cranbrook, BC playing hockey, volleyball, and golf. He first tried the sport of rowing as a student at UBC. Three years later, Ben was a world champion in the Canadian men’s eight, and he repeated this feat the very next year.
After a fifth place finish at the 2004 Athens Olympics, Ben continued his quest for gold. In 2007, he and his teammates reclaimed their position at the top of the world, and then won gold in convincing fashion in Beijing at the 2008 Olympics.
In combination with his training, Ben is also involved with Right to Play, a humanitarian organization that uses sport and play programs to improve health, develop life skills, and foster peace for children and communities in disadvantaged areas. He also volunteers his time coaching first-year rowers at UBC, and hopes to develop more potential Olympians.
