Olympic Rowers Come Out to Support Heat Athletes

Jake Wetzel

As a teenager, Jake was on the Canadian junior cycling team. He began rowing in 1997 at the University of California, Berkeley, and a short time later was competing with the US national team, winning gold in the coxed four event at the 1999 St. Catharines World Championships, and finishing seventh with the quad at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

In 2003, Jake joined Team Canada, made the straight four squad, and won a gold medal at the World Championships in Milan, Italy. At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Jake’s boat finished second by inches to Great Britain. He won the 2007 World Championships in Canada’s men’s eight and the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the men’s eight.

Jake announced his retirement from international rowing at the Beijing Olympics and has enrolled in UBC’s PhD program in Finance.
