Steve Nash Comes to UBC O
|
At the beginning of the 2006/07 Basketball season, UBC-O Lakers basketball representatives talked to Bruce McKay, President of the 'Steve Nash' league in Kelowna, about the possibility of involving these young athletes(grades 3-6) in a positive experience during Basketball games at UBC-O. Bruce McKay was very receptive to this idea and so the concept of 'Steve Nash' players scrimmaging at the half time of Laker games came about. That first scrimmage was a tremendous success for both the 'Steve Nash' players and the UBC-O basketball teams. The 'Steve Nash' basketball players loved to play on the big UBC-O court as well as shooting at the 10 foot hoop. They usually play with a 7 foot hoop. Parents and fans seem to enjoy watching these young basketball players play the game and will often cheer at every hoop made. The 'Steve Nash' half time scrimmages are now in the second season of play and the parent and family support for this special activity seems to be growing. One of the activities that both the 'Steve Nash' kids and the UBC-O Lakers enjoy is the autograph session at the end of the game in the Laker 'Team Room'. Autographs are signed on UBC-O pictures, personal basketballs and even Steve Nash jerseys....a good time is had by all. The UBC-O Lakers Women and Men's teams really appreciate the opportunity to have a positive influence on young and upcoming Laker Basketball Players. If you are a 'Steve Nash' coach and would like to have your team participate in a half time scrimmage...please contact UBC-O Basketball volunteer ddsememniuk@shaw.ca for more information.
