The Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Major is designed to provide graduates with a coherent and well-developed knowledge of these fields.
Students graduating from UBC Okanagan with a B.Sc. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology will have a wide variety of practical experience and skills in laboratory and field work, computers and communications (both verbal and written). This program prepares students for graduate school and professional programs.
Nationally and internationally, there are rapidly increasing job opportunities for graduates in the fields of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Graduates often find work in environmental fields, including research, non-profits, government, and teaching. Students in this major will benefit from interactions with the faculty and graduate students who are part of the Species at Risk and Habitat Studies centre, as well as the Okanagan Sustainability Institute.
The courses offered at UBC Okanagan include:
The major is designed to be flexible in the 3rd and 4th year, to enable students to pursue particular interests within Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, for example microbial, physiology and behaviour, spatial and conservation, or developmental.
Many students will also find opportunities in the summer or during semester to work on lab or field research projects with our faculty and graduate students.
Graduates will obtain a grounding in theory, practical experience, and skills in laboratory and field work, computers, and communications (both verbal and written). With the inclusion of a required research component to their curriculum, the students who complete this program will have demonstrated their ability for competent independent work. This experience is designed to prepare students for graduate school.
The course requirements are the same as in the Major in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, except that students must complete 6 credits of BIOL 440 in the elective component of the program.
