The Geography Course Union (GCU) at UBC Okanagan is an organization that has been built by the students for the students. The purpose of the union is to raise funds through a variety of means so that learning can be taken out of the classroom and into the real world for its members.
Additionally, social events are organized which bring students together to have fun and get to know one another. Our main event for the year is a trip to the Western Division of the Canadian Association of Geographers (WDCAG) conference, which over the past three years has seen students travel to Kamloops, Abbotsford and Bellingham. This provides an opportunity for students to present their research to other geography experts. Further, the GCU organizes bowling nights, ski trips, a Christmas dinner and a year end dinner, which is a chance to celebrate the graduation of geography students (where all members of the GCU were brought together to congratulate and support their peers in their achievements and future endeavors).
The GCU is one of the smaller course unions on campus but has been very successful over the past few years. Through the collective support of our members and professors, the GCU has been able to meet its goals of providing a welcoming environment for the geography community at UBCO. Further information can be obtained by emailing geogcu@gmail.com.
