Celebrate Research Awards

At the research gala, two faculty members were honoured with prestigious awards:

Researcher of the Year

Philip Ainslie, Canada Research Chair in Cerebrovascular Function in Health and Disease and associate professor in the School of Health and Exercise Sciences, has been named Researcher of the Year at UBC’s Okanagan campus.

Public Education Through Media award

Christine Schreyer, an assistant professor of anthropology with the Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences, was honoured with the Public Education through Media Award for outstanding service to the university and community by sharing her research expertise through innovative and creative ways via the news media.

Research Rodeo Winners

The Research Rodeo competition, an exciting new feature of research week, saw nine undergraduate and 12 graduate students deliver the best pitch about their research projects in three minutes. The following students were recognized as the winners:

  • Undergraduate students:
    Ashley Yip, Science, The Effects of Exercise on the Gut Microflora and Immunity to Inflammatory Disease
    Kimberly Lemky, Science, How Bugs Move Drugs (also received the People's Choice Award)
    Karly Drabot, Psychology, Improving the Health of Men Who Have Sex With Men: Engaging Local Physicians.
  • Graduate students:
    David Kadish, Engineering, Automatic Computer Recognition of Facial Expressions
    Gabriel Newman, Creative and Critical Studies, Social Potluck
    Jocelyn Madeira, Biology, Gold Compounds and Your Brain: Auranofin as Neuroprotective and Anti-Neuroinflammatory Molecule (also received the People's Choice Award).
