Alaa Abd-El-Aziz

Biography  

Dr. Alaa S. Abd-El-Aziz has been a Senior Administrator at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBC Okanagan) in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada since 2006. His first appointment at UBC Okanagan was the Associate Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Academic and Research. In December 2007 Dr. Abd-El-Aziz was named UBC Okanagan’s first Provost. Dr. Abd-El-Aziz is also a Professor of Chemistry at UBC Okanagan. 

Dr. Abd-El-Aziz received his B. Sc. and M. Sc. degrees from Ain Shams University in Cairo Egypt. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1989 from the University of Saskatchewan and completing an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Toronto, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Winnipeg in 1990. In 1997 Dr. Abd-El-Aziz moved to the rank of Full Professor. Other previous appointments at the University of Winnipeg include: Chair of the Department of Chemistry, Dean of Science, Associate Vice-President (Research and Graduate Studies) and Vice-President (Research, International & External Affairs).

Research Interests 

Dr. Abd-El-Aziz’s current research interest is on the synthesis and characterization of metal-containing polymers, including:       

  • Development of new synthetic methodologies for organic and organometallic polymers
  • Electrochemical studies of organometallic oligomeric and polymeric materials
  • Investigation of structural variations on the thermal properties of polymers      
  • The role of different metals in changing the reactivities of substituted benzenes toward nucleophilic aromatic substitution and addition reactions  
  • Degradation of organic contaminants 

Dr. Abd-El-Aziz has over 100 publications, including a book, “A Half Century of Metal and Metalloid Containing Polymers,” Macromolecules Containing Metal and Metal-like Elements, Volume 1 (A.S. Abd-El-Aziz, C.E. Carraher Jr., C.U. Pittman Jr., J. Sheats and M. Zeldin) and eight book chapters, in addition to two patents.   

Awards & Recognition  

In 1997, Dr. Abd-El-Aziz was named a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada, and has been the recipient of a number of awards including the Erica & Arnold Rogers Award for Excellence in Research and Scholarship (1994), and the Clifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching (1992).
