Community Day 2011 - Event Program

The theme of Community Day 2011 is educational fun: an opportunity for you to enjoy yourself while learning something new about UBC's oustanding Okanagan campusf.  You can look forward to hands-on activities, demonstrations, and research presentations -- the latter giving you the opportunity to listen to some of Canada's top researchers -- while engaging with a variety of outstanding faculty, staff, and students.  Don't forget to grab a free hot dog and snacks while listening to some tunes!

Educational Fun

We want to invite the local communities to partake in some of the many programs taking place on and around UBC's Okanagan campus: engage with student initiatives, such as clubs, course unions, and entertainers; check out faculty research demonstrations, where you'll learn about some of the projects currently underway; and discover some of the services that departments on campus offer.

To learn more about what to expect for Educational Fun, check out the list of partners that will be attending.

Research Presentations

This is your chance to learn, first hand, about some of the outstanding research being done by some of Canada's most promising academics.  Be sure to check out research presentations planned for the day:

  • Professor Christopher Schneider, assistant professor of Sociology, will examine the role of social media in connection with the 2011 Stanley Cup riots in Vancouver.
  • Professor Christine Schreyer, assistant professor of Anthropology, will discuss the world-wide popularity of Na'vi, the language created for the top-grossing film Avatar
  • Professor Gordon Lovegrove, assistant professor of Engineering, will talk about ComPASS, a new sustainability initiative that focuses on providing families with inexpensive, ubiquitous access to public transportation.
  • Professor Allan Jones, Regional Associate Dean, Interior and Anthony Knezevic, Manager of Collaboration Technologies, will discuss how the Southern Medical Program, the newest addition to UBC’s distributed MD Undergraduate Program, educates and trains future medical professionals through the delivery of an exciting curriculum and a progressive learning environment.

All presentations will take place in Arts 103.

Tours

Guided Tours

Take a tour of UBC's Okanagan campus with the Development Office and learn about new campus developments, technology, and projects; discover what resources are available to students, staff, faculty, and visitors; and explore two of UBC's newest buildings: Engineering, Management & Education and the Health Services Centre.

Informal Tours

We also encourage you to explore the campus at your own leisure.  Maps with a legend will be given out at the Welcome & Information Tent when you first arrive.  Make sure to ask a volunteer for directions or information!
