Improvements in genetics, communication technologies, medical care, and environmental monitoring have been made possible by Computer Science. A computer scientist innovates by studying what and how computation can solve problems and improve society. Computer scientists discover new ideas, implement these ideas in technology, and build systems to make this technology useful for people. The technology we take for granted today (Internet, cell phones, embedded devices) were discovered, implemented, and refined by computer scientists. As a future computer scientist, your creativity could produce the next major technology or use technology to remake the world. The power is in your hands.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at UBC's Okanagan campus, in part with OCANA, will be holding an Optimization Workshop on July 9-11th. The workshop will provide undergraduate students in mathematics and computer science with an introduction to optimization, and to give students a flavor of modern optimization research. This two and a half days will include introductory courses on monotone operators, derivative-free optimization, and variational analysis, a hands-on lab on computer-aided tools for convex analysis, and 3 presentations by international researchers in optimization and by a UBC alumnus working in industry on solving optimization problems. The workshop will also include a competition with cash prizes. While there is no registration fee, registration is mandatory for organizational reasons. The poster for the event can be downloaded from here.
Join us at Canada's premier undergraduate mathematics conference! Students are invited to give a talk, but are also welcome to simply attend and learn from others. There is the opportunity to network with other students from across the country and have fun at special social events. Online registration is now open. The poster poster for this event can be downloaded from here.
The Unit 5 Showcase Series will present four world-class speakers talking about their research and experience at UBCO. Show your support: mark your calendars and see you there!
