Welcome to the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies and the Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Science’s Bachelor of Arts Program. As a first year student, we encourage you to explore your options as you establish yourself as a student at the Okanagan Campus of UBC. Our Bachelor of Arts program offers a unique learning environment and we encourage you to take advantage of social and academic opportunities offered both in the classroom and beyond.

This first year advising sheet will assist you in course planning for the Bachelor of Arts programs for programs in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies and the Irving K Barber School.

Bachelor of Fine Arts - Visual Arts

Choosing Your Classes

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Arts provides a solid foundation in visual art in the first year. The course requirements are designed to give students a diversity of courses and a common understanding of the variety offered by the program and a balance of academic and studio courses.

First Year Requirements

  • Six credits from ENGL 112, 113, 150, 151, 152, and 153
  • ARTH 131 and 141 Art History I and II
  • ARTH 132 and 142 Visual Forum: Theory and Popular Culture
  • VISA 133 and 143 Drawing I and II
  • VISA 135 and 145 Two Dimensional Structures I and II
  • VISA 136 and 146 Dimensional Structures I and II

Additional Program Costs

Students should anticipate additional expenses ($1000 to $1500) for materials not normally supplied in studio courses. Students should budget approximately $300 for textbooks. A laboratory fee for second year students may be assessed.

Tips for Success

Field Trips: Students will be given an opportunity to participate in field trips and seminars at a variety of locations. Participation in these activities is not mandatory but is an extremely valuable experience. Expenses for field trips and seminars are not part of the normal tuition fees and are the students' responsibility.

Visiting Artists: The Visiting Artist program offers students exposure to professional artists through lectures and studio sessions.
