As an expression of the unique nature of the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, the Department of Critical Studies offers an Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies (IGS) Master of Arts Thematic Option called Studies in Cultures and Texts .
Drawing on faculty who are nationally and internationally known scholars - who teach within the Art History, English, French, Japanese, and Spanish programs and who are members of the UBC Okanagan College of Graduate Studies - Studies in Cultures and Texts brings disparate areas of research into fruitful dialogue around discrete, compelling and contemporary annual “themes”.
The department has particular strengths in historical and contemporary literatures, film and media studies, and cultural criticism and theory (including postcolonial, feminist/gender studies). “Deviance and Defiance" provides the theme for 2009 to 2010 and all elective courses will address it, though from very different disciplinary and philosophical perspectives. The degree prepares students for further graduate studies in literature and languages, art history, popular culture, cultural studies and film studies by developing their expertise in one or several of these fields.
Each student must complete six credits of methodology courses (501X Studies in Critical Theory and 501Y Studies in Cultural Theory), twelve credits of further course work, a twelve credit thesis project, and relevant professionalization workshops. With the approval of the Studies in Cultures and Texts Thematic Option committee, students may take up to three credits of cross-listed graduate courses in other areas of Graduate Studies, such as the MA in English. While currently all course instruction is in English, theses may be completed in English, French or Spanish. Completion of the degree requirements will normally take two years, though highly motivated students may succeed in completing all degree requirements in twelve months.
The SCT Thematic option offers the following courses on a rotational basis:
The courses for a specific year are posted under the SCT Theme for that year in early December of the previous year. 2009/10 courses will be posted in December of 2008.
