GRADUATE STUDENT NEWS
Enrolled in IGS M.A. | September 2011 | Supervised by Dr. Jodey Castricano
On Sunday, May 29, 2011, at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, English Honours Undergraduate Student Taylor Scanlon presented her conference paper at a joint session between ACCUTE (the Association of Canadian College and University Teachers of English) and the IGA (International Gothic Association). About 20 members of ACCUTE and the IGA were in attendance. In her presentation, entitled "Indefinite Monsters: Reading Lycanthropy as Grotesque in the HBO Television Series True Blood," Taylor examined how the figure of the werewolf in the HBO series True Blood signifies the Southern Gothic trope of the grotesque within a Critical Animal Studies context. Travel to ACCUTE was partially funded by the Department of Critical Studies.
Furthermore, Taylor presented a paper at the Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies conference, Borders and Border Crossings, at UBC Okanagan campus in May 2011.
A group of students from Critical Studies have created an interdisciplinary magazine that aims to examine 'white' privilege in the Okanagan through a collection of short fiction, poetry, photography and academic and historical articles.
Contributors in the first issue, launced in March 2011, include Lindsay Diehl, Meaghan Hume, Natalie Ingram and Carrie Karsgaard. Artwork by Rebecca Shaw.
