In academe we teach courses in our area of specialization; thus I teach courses in Canadian and Modern Art History, Global Contemporary Art History, and Disability Studies and Art History. However this doesn't mean that I only look at art within these parameters: I look at all art and visual culture, from Romanesque sculpture to contemporary works by Latin American artists, and on a recent trip to London, at the Islamic Collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. What matters to me is bringing a critical eye to bear on art history and visual culture, engaging contemporary theoretical models to extend understanding of this thing we call ‘art’. For me, teaching and research are intertwined: teaching is, in many ways, modeling for students how they can further develop their interests in their various fields of study. It all starts with looking, and a healthy dose of curiosity is a tremendous help. My current research interests revolve around mapping early visual representations of the Okanagan Valley, and in investigating the role of the tourist-artist in documenting the changing cityspace of Paris around 1900. |
