Hiring International Students:
There is a new process for getting Social Insurance Numbers.
You have to follow it carefully or the application will be rejected. Please keep this email on file for future reference.
- Historically letters of employment have been acceptable for students along with their study permit, however a recent change to the processes for social insurance numbers has drastically changed the amount of information we require.
- Our website addresses this matter and provides a sample contract. While the contract is not mandatory, ALL of the shaded fields must be completed or we would have to turn the applicant away. Using the contract from the website would be the easiest way to insure all data is captured. However, a letter is permissible but it MUST include all of the mandatory shaded areas.
- Whether on the sample contract or in a letter format the completed contract MUST be on company letterhead. You'll find the information and sample contract at this link:
- Here is a list of the mandatory fields:
- * Gender of the student
- * Date of birth of the student
- * Surname, Given Name of the student
- * Study Permit Document Number
- * Date the Study Permit was signed
- * Date of expiry of the Study permit
- * Name of the On-Campus Department or On-Campus Business hiring the student
- * Employer's Name
- * Civic address where the work will be performed
- * Employer's Signature
- * Employer's Telephone number
- * Contract of employment, which must show the start and end date of employment and these dates must fall within the study permit dates.
- * Employees' s Start and end dates of employment
- * Signature of student and Date signed
- Note: An employer can use a different contract of employment, as long as it contains all the mandatory information requested in the sample contract.
- Thank you in advance for your help and should you require any clarification please feel free to contact me.
