Cultural Studies

The Cultural Studies program at UBC Okanagan is a unique program in western Canada. Drawing upon the tradition of cultural studies, as developed at the Birmingham School in the U.K., our program draws together courses from a variety of Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines. The program includes courses in North American Popular Culture (film, television, hip hop, video games, etc), but the UBC Okanagan program is distinct in Canada for the way in which it seeks to approach questions of identity, power, and justice from an intercultural and global perspective.

Check out the various links for more information on the program, people, and work of Cultural Studies.

“It's all about looking at culture (movies, art, advertising, etc.) in order to get a better sense of how the world is structured, and how these structures reproduce unequal power relations. It's also a very "flexible," multi-disciplinary program, influenced by a diversity of theories and theorists. It's basically helped me to look at the world in a different way.” - Naoko (Student)
