Who (Students)

Cultural Studies Students Association

Whether you are a Cultural Studies Major, Minor, or just take Cultural Studies courses as electives, you are welcome to join the Cultural Studies Students Association. The CCSA is an engaged and active community of students who meet together to discuss issues and ideas related to popular culture, identity politics, and global issues. As well the Association organizes events both on campus and in the community. In 2009/10 the CCSA collaborated with the Reel Youth Film Festival (Vancouver) to organize a video competition for Kelowna Youth and a screening of local and national short videos produced by youth.

Some Current Students and Recent Graduates:

Brianne Nettlefield

Brianne Nettlefield – Current student and founder of the Cultural Studies Students Association.

“I'm a cultural studies major because after taking one class I realized two things: A. This is how I see the world; B. This is without a doubt, what I want to learn.”

“The best thing about being a cultural studies major is the variety of things that you get to learn and explore. I never thought I would discover that I really wanted to make films. It also allows me to get involved in activism, and learn about global issues. It's like...all of these awesome interesting things wrapped into one.”

Cultural Studies student Naoko HoshiNaoko Hoshi – Current Cultural Studies Major

“Cultural studies is tailored to fit your individual interests, so I think the flexible nature of the program will help me really hone in on a specific topic of research for grad school. I tend to get disillusioned with post-secondary education however, so I'm not sure I'll actually go to grad school. I am really not taking this degree to get a job.”

“Gothic film with Jodey Castricano has been my favorite course so far. Dr. Castricano is an amazing professor and the Gothic as an area of study really appealed to my love of feminist theory.”

Jordan Rockerbie – Current Cultural Studies Major
“I am a cultural studies major because I knew that I wanted to work towards a degree in the Arts, but there were just too many programs to choose from. With cultural studies, I can still take a variety of different courses that I find relevant. In 2010/11 I will study in Singapore as part of the Go Global program.”

“I plan to take a year off after graduating and maybe do some teaching abroad. After that I want to go back to school and possibly pursue a degree in law. My cultural studies degree is exposing my preconceptions about different cultures, and teaching me to be critical of myself. I believe that both of these things will help me in the long run, especially in dealing with our increasingly globalized world.”

Mari Tanaka – One of the first four graduates of the UBC O Cultural Studies Program, 2009. She is currently an M.A. student at UBC Okanagan.

“I think majoring in Cultural Studies really fostered my critical thinking skills and exposed me to different ways of thinking...about thinking. I think it groomed and prepared me for graduate school.”

“I enjoyed TV and manga classes because they are my favorite form of visual media, and Indigenous theory because it changed my perspective on a lot of different things, both personally and academically.”
