“The best thing about being a cultural studies major is the creativity involved with projects and papers; it requires a different way of thinking which is otherwise discouraged in different disciplines.” Maiya (Student)

As a BA degree, Cultural Studies provides a person knowledge in a particular academic discipline, as well as skills and abilities in time-management, organization, reasoning, argument, and communication. Such skills are crucial for a wide variety of jobs. A BA degree is an important part of preparing you for a career, but it is only a part. Many professions require
specialized post-graduate training (e.g. Law, Education), and it is important to gain work experience through campus programs (like Work Study, Work Learn, and Service Learning) and by volunteering with agencies related to your career aspirations.

“After I finish my degree I want to make documentaries and write. I also want to get into humanitarian aid. This degree prepares me to do those things because it gives me an ‘understanding’ - which I believe a lot of people lack. I am training myself to be the best tool that I can be to facilitate change.” – Brianne (Student)

Recurring comments from first year students emphasize how the courses introduce them to new ideas and approaches that they had never thought of before OR finally provide them the sort of education they have always known they wanted: an education that requires creativity, independence, and engagement with their daily experiences and the world around them.  Our graduates tend to go on to professions that demand creative thinking and a proficiency in analyzing texts and communicating ideas. The issues, themes, and methodology of Cultural Studies are current, diverse, engaged, and self-relfexive.
