The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish is a program offered by the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies. Study in Spanish offers students a comprehensive learning experience that includes one of the world's most widely spoken languages. In addition to language skills, students will gain knowledge of the literary traditions and a basic historical understanding of the shaping of the cultures of Spain and Spanish America.

The core of the Spanish Major program will consist of courses in Spanish covering language, literature and culture. The language-learning aspect of the program will cover practical skills and daily application of Spanish, as well as skills that are transferable to a work environment and an academic setting. Students will acquire strong fluency in Spanish through courses in grammar, conversation and translation. Also, students will have the option of spending a semester abroad studying and experiencing life in a Spanish-speaking environment.

Students will explore other facets of language study through selected courses in Anthropology, English, French, Greek, Latin, Philosophy, Psychology or other approved courses. These additional courses will contribute to the broadening of students' understanding of language and communication.

This Major is a flexible one, and students can choose to concentrate in Spanish language, Spanish literature and/or Spanish American literature; Spanish linguistics; or English-Spanish translation.

Students are advised to meet with a departmental academic advisor during the first year to plan their Major or Minor in Spanish. The advisor should also be consulted about study abroad.

Program Outline

This program follows a standard university four-year B.A. structure and length (four years, eight terms, 120 credits).

First and second-year courses are foundational. Students are prepared for academic use of Spanish through grammar, composition, aural and oral practice.

In their third and fourth years, students study major literary movements, deepen their knowledge of the language through translation, advanced grammar and composition courses, and explore the history and culture of the language through civilization and culture courses. Students must also complete 6 credits of approved language or culture-related courses.

A Minor in Spanish is a great way for students to achieve proficiency in the Spanish language and exposure to global Spanish cultures while pursuing study in another area of study.

Latin American Studies is an undergraduate program designed to give students a broad general knowledge of Latin America and its diverse peoples and to allow them to construct a truly interdisciplinary approach to study the language, culture, society, geography, political systems, and history of Latin America.
