E-Learning Resources for Faculty

E-learning refers to technology enhanced learning, including the use of mobile technologies, web-based teaching materials, multimedia, collaborative social software tools, and course management software such as WebCT Vista. Here at UBC many of our instructors use a combination of technologies to support and enhance the face to face teaching environment.

The Centre for Teaching and Learning is committed to a scholarly approach toward technology use. To learn more about innovative and effective e-learning strategies, please contact us.

WebCT Vista

WebCT Vista is a web-based system that provides a set of communication, assessment and evaluation, content management and delivery and course administration tools in support of online learning to enhance the face to face classroom.  Use of WebCT Vista covers a range from serving as a web-based aid (distribute handouts or grades) through to serving as a fully online classroom for distance delivery.

The Centre for Teaching and Learning is available to support instructors using WebCT Vista and can provide helpful resources, perform course creation, add users and various other WebCT Vista administration functions.

i·clickers

Interwrite Clickers give teachers a powerful assessment tool for connecting to students.  This student response system is ideal for active student participation (even in the largest classrooms) and provides immediate feedback to the instructor and students.  Instructors can instantly gauge student comprehension to guide lectures or class discussions.  Quizzes can be delivered and instantly graded and results recorded  to WebCT Vista gradebook.  Add questions to your existing PowerPoint slides, or use for homework.

Highly customizable, e-Portfolios allow you to assemble subsets of your work to present to instructors, potential employers, and others via login. e-Portfolios have shown great potential to document individual learning and growth for UBC students and instructors.   If you are interested in using learning e-portfolios in your class with your students, in developing a personal teaching e-portfolio, or joining the Community of Practice, visit our e-Portfolio page.

Learning Objects and Reusable Learning Resources

As the growth of media continues to explode online, questions arise on how to find quality online learning resources, what are the associated copyright issues, and how they may be integrated into effective online learning here at UBC Okanagan.  For more information about the tools and strategies for managing and reusing online learning materials, please visit Merlot.

StudyMate is an authoring tool that lets you create Flash-based activities and games using templates.  The Flash activities are usable with any web server or can be published directly into a WebCT Vista course.  StudyMate will import items from MS Word files or the Respondus Test Bank Network.  UBC has a license that permits UBC instructors to use StudyMate.  For more information, contact the Centre for Teaching and Learning.

TurnItIn

UBC subscribes to a service called TurnItIn. This service provides instructors and students with the ability to scan submitted papers. Material copied from websites, purchased papers, assignments and essays previously submitted to TurnItIn, and some published works are readily identified. In response to a growing concern about a "level playing field" for all students, subscribing to this service reinforces academic integrity as a core value of our university.
