Description

Partners in Teaching and Scholarship is a faculty peer mentoring program designed to assist new continuing teaching faculty achieve excellence in teaching and scholarship. The program is characterized by an experienced faculty member from another discipline taking an active role in the development of a new faculty member by offering guidance, support and advice. As strongly suggested in the Mentoring literature, the most productive arrangement for mentoring relationships based upon these priorities is cross-disciplinary. This mentoring program is not, therefore, seen as a substitute for discipline-based relationships, but rather as a complement to the other resources available to new faculty.

The format of this program will consist of partnership monthly meetings, four mentoring lunches (sponsored by the Centre for Teaching and Learning), complemented by a speaker series providing teaching and learning professional development.

Program Objectives

  • Provide new faculty an opportunity to become knowledgeable about teaching and to develop a range of teaching strategies.
  • Provide faculty an opportunity to become familiar with new and emerging trends in teaching, learning and technology.
  • Foster a cooperative network by helping new faculty meet and network with other faculty and staff.
  • Contribute to new faculty morale, motivation, and a sense of community.

Timetable

New Faculty Identification - August/September
New tenure-track teaching faculty appointments will be identified and invited to participate in the program. New faculty interested in participating will reply with biographical information and personal objectives relating to mentoring.

Experienced Faculty Identification - August
On the advice of Deans and chairs an invitation will be sent out explaining the program to an equal number of experienced faculty members from a wide range of disciplines. Interested experienced faculty will reply with biographical information and personal objectives relating to mentoring.

Partnership Pairing – September
Matches will be interdisciplinary and facilitated through a process of shared biographical information, and personal objectives relating to mentoring.

Monthly meetings between partners
Regular meetings once a month represents an appropriate amount of commitment. Experienced faculty may support their partners by providing:

  1. Suggestions for the development of effective teaching strategies and use of technology in their learning environments.
  2. Access to an expanded network of professional contacts
