Dr. Doug Owram
Deputy Vice Chancellor and Principal

Dr. Doug OwramDoug Owram was appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor and Principal of UBC Okanagan on July 1, 2006. Born in Aurora, Ontario and Educated at Queen's University (B.A. Hons; M.A.) and the University of Toronto (Ph.D.), he was a faculty member at the University of Alberta from 1976 until joining UBC Okanagan on July 1, 2006.

During his time at the University of Alberta he served in several administrative roles culminating in his appointment as Vice-President (Academic) in 1995. In 1998 the title of Provost was added making him the Chief Operating Officer of the university.  He completed his term as Provost and Vice-President (Academic) in 2003.

In addition, Dr. Owram has served in many capacities outside the university.  Chief among these was his tenure as President of the Canadian Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences from 2001 to 2003 and Chair of the Campus Alberta Quality Council from its inception in 2004 until July 1 2006, and continued as a board member to September 2008. 

Dr. Owram is a Canadian historian who has authored or co-authored some eight books as well as many articles. In recognition of his academic work he was made a member of the Royal Society of Canada in 1990 and awarded the Kaplin Award for Excellence in Research in 1995. He is currently a member of the Council of the Royal Society and Secretary to Academy I.

Deputy Vice Chancellor and Principal's Role

The Deputy Vice Chancellor and Principal provides over-all leadership for the University of British Columbia Okanagan and functions as a key member of the UBC system leadership team. The Deputy Vice Chancellor and Principal ensures an effective organizational structure that reflects operational needs and is responsible for strategic planning based on the imperatives outlined in the UBC Okanagan Academic Plan. The Deputy Vice Chancellor and Principal also has the responsibility of ensuring the strategic allocation of resources and stewarding of those resources to ensure a sustainable financial plan. Externally the Deputy Vice Chancellor and Principal works to foster effective relationships and collaborations within the larger Okanagan community, provincially, and internationally.
