Although there are no formal course requirements for the Ph. D. It is unusual that a student would not take advantage of the course offerings at UBC to improve their skillset. The student and supervisor determine a graduate academic plan of coursework related to the research. The degree plan is submitted for advisory committee approval prior to graduation. Students will the register in and complete the following:
1. Selected courses.
2. ENGR 599 (thesis) every term until graduation.
3. ENGR 596a (seminar) each term until they present their first seminar and earn a grade of pass (typically in their second year of study), they then register for ENGR 596b each term until they present their second seminar and earn a grade of pass (typically in their last term before graduation).
All students will have annual progress reviews with their advisory committee. This usually involves the preparation and submission of a report to the committee and then the presentation of a brief oral report to the committee.
Students will take their comprehensive exam/proposal defense within 24 months of first registration. Once this is complete the student will continue their research as proposed continuing to register for thesis hours.
When the student and supervisor agree the dissertation is complete it will be sent to the advisory committee for their comments and suggestions. Once the supervisor and committee members agree the thesis is acceptable the supervisor will send the thesis to the College of Graduate Studies to initiate the dissertation defence process.
The dissertation must be defended within 6 years of admission to the Ph. D. program.
