Transfer Credits

Advanced credit is given in appropriate secondary school subjects where high academic achievement has been attained in Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate (Higher Level), or General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) programs.

Transfer credit is granted for courses taken at another institution which are equivalent to a UBC course that is part of a student's program. A student may be granted an exemption from a course, typically with credit replacement, if the material for the course for which an exemption has been granted has been covered. The initial assessment is made at the time of admission based on established equivalencies.

Admissions provide the students with a note in their acceptance letter to contact the School of Engineering Student Development Office to determine if they are eligible for transfer credits. The following steps take place when the students contact us.

  1. Check institution for any established equivalencies.
  2. Student provides a statement indicating his or her assessment of equivalencies between the two institutions. Student also asked to have course outlines available.
  3. Student provides a copy of his or her transcript, if not already on file.
  4. Review request with student to determine which faculty member(s) the student will need to contact to have course(s) evaluated. Student provided with necessary contact information.
  5. Student will ask faculty member to e-mail the School of Engineering Student Development Office of his or her recommendation for transfer credit when evaluation is completed.
  6. The School of Engineering Student Development Office will review recommendation and notify Admissions to add transfer credit, if applicable. The School of Engineering Student Development Office will notify the student of the outcome.

The processing of transfer credits for evaluation is very time consuming, therefore, due to time commitments, the School of Engineering Student Development Office is only able to coordinate this function for a minimal number of students. Ideally, program planning with individual transfer students should occur over the summer.

Requests to review courses for transfer credit are initiated by students, Admissions or Go Global. Transfer credits may be granted based on the BC Transfer Guide, a data file maintained by the School of Engineering Student Development Office of courses from different institutions that have been reviewed, or a review of the course outline by a faculty member in the field. Approved requests are submitted to Admissions for entry into their database and onto the student’s record.

A student who is registered in the engineering program and is planning on taking courses at another institution must first obtain permission from the Associate Director – Undergraduate Studies. If the student is permitted to take courses elsewhere, a letter of permission will be provided to indicate the courses that will transfer back to the student’s degree program.
