General Background

Dr. Holzman received his Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta in 2003. In 2004-2005, he carried out research in ultrafast all-optical switching as an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow in the High-Speed Electronics and Photonics Group at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zürich, Switzerland. He is now an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering at the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus and group leader of the Integrated Optics Laboratory. Teaching Interests

Dr. Holzman has many teaching interests at the undergraduate and graduate levels:

  • Photonic and electronic sensor/device technologies - including Semiconductor Devices (ENGR 353), Fibre-Optics and Photonics (ENGR 472/572), Ultrafast Laser Phenomena (APSC 598I).
  • Electro- and magneto-hydrodynamics related to digital microfluidic devices - including Engineering Electromagnetics (ENGR 365), Microfluidics (APSC 598G), Multi-physics Modelling (APSC 598U).

Research Interests

Dr. Jonathan Holzman develops micro-sensor technologies. Devices are fabricated in our Applied Micro and Nanosystems Facility and tested in our Integrated Optics Laboratory. These photonic devices are directed toward applications ranging from the large-scale (integrated optoelectronic sensors for optical wireless applications) to the small-scale (micro-sensors/actuators for digital microfluidic applications):

  • Integrated optoelectronic sensors for optical wireless applications: Dr. Holzman's sensor work in the Integrated Optics Laboratory is applied, through optoelectronic switching, within the UBC Okanagan Optical Wireless Research Group. His work in this group focuses on the development of sensor-technologies for optical wireless (i.e. free-space) communications. Microtextured retro-structures and resonant micro-spheroids are fabricated and tested for establishing these bi-directional high-speed links. This emerging light-based technology has numerous potential benefits, as it offers incredibly high data communication rates (in the same way that fibre optic technologies have revolutionized long-haul Terabit/second data transmission) together with the distributive benefits of wireless networking.
  • Micro-sensors/actuators for digital microfluidic applications: Dr. Holzman's sensor work in the Integrated Optics Laboratory is also applied for bio- and chemical-sensing applications as part of the UBC Okanagan Digital Microfluidics Research Group. This interdisciplinary research group develops integrated devices for lab-on-a-chip systems. The digital architectures merge micron-scale electrical circuitry with applications requiring dynamic fluid control. Electrical actuation signals from patterned electrodes are used to direct/actuate fluid flow within the chips. Such implementations offer incredible practical advantages as the structures are reconfigurable and allow for high throughputs.
