Civil Engineering - Structural Engineering

The structural engineering group is undertaking research projects, headed by Dr. Ahmad Rteil and
Dr. Solomon Tesfamariam, in the analysis, design, and condition evaluation and retrofitting of new and existing civil infrastructure systems. Current research projects are:

Risk Analysis for Civil Infrastructure Systems

  • Developing a robust seismic risk assessment tools. (Dr. S. Tesfamariam)
  • Developing a novel multi-criteria decision making tools for seismic risk management.
(Dr. S. Tesfamariam and Dr. R. Sadiq)

Maintaining and Rehabilitating Aging Infrastructure

  • Condition assessment using non-destructive testing. (Dr. S. Tesfamariam and Dr. A. Rteil)
  • Developing expert systems for diagnosis. (Dr. S. Tesfamariam)
  • Repair and strengthening methodologies for existing structures using advanced materials such as fibre reinforced polymer (FRP). (Dr. A. Rteil)
  • Investigating advanced smart structures using active materials such as piezoelectric actuators, and shape memory alloys. (Dr. S. Tesfamariam)

Design and Analysis of Durable and Sustainable Structures

  • Development of new analysis and design procedures for FRP reinforced concrete structures.
    (Dr. A. Rteil)
  • Investigating the use of sustainable material (adobe, straw bale) and post-consumer waste products in construction. (Dr. A. Rteil and Dr. G. Lovegrove)

The courses listed below are suggested for students interested in the structural engineering option but students may select courses from any 3rd, or 4th year undergraduate (maximum of 6 credits) or graduate level courses at UBC Okanagan or UBC Vancouver with the approval of the supervisor and graduate chair.
