Sustainable Systems Engineering (SSE) is a multi-disciplinary research division focusing on sustainable futures through engineering innovation. There are two main research areas under SSE.
1. Sustainable Transportation Systems – Headed by Dr. Gordon Lovegrove
2. Project and Construction Management – Headed by Dr. Kasun Hewage

SSE encourages students to take courses not only in ‘Sustainable Transportation Systems’ and ‘Project & Construction Management’, but also in other civil engineering programs, management, and social sciences. Students select their courses in consultation with their research supervisor and the graduate chair. The undergraduate or previous graduate preparation, the knowledge required for the research project and the student’s career plans are taken into account during course selection and academic planning.
