Financial Controls and Accuracy Certification - 2011-2012
In October of 2005 a program to certify the accuracy and completeness of the financial results and the operation of internal controls for each Unit ( Faculty or Business Unit) was successfully initiated at the University. The certification presents the opportunity to emphasize the importance of financial reviews and internal controls.
Like last year, all Vice Presidents, the Deputy Vice Chancellor and each of their direct reports will be asked to complete a statement for 2011/2012 certifying that financial results for their Units are accurate and that internal controls over financial reporting are operating effectively. A questionnaire is typically completed by the Financial Officer of the Unit and then reviewed with the Unit Head.

To help Unit Managers and Financial Officers understand what is required of them the Department of Finance and Internal Audit offers a seminar on risk identification and controls for financial reporting. A series of internal control self assessment questionnaires have also been developed to assist Units in determining if all significant control risks are being addressed. I encourage each unit to complete these questionnaires. Details of the training dates and the internal control questionnaires can be found on the Finance Website.
The Unit Financial Certification Statement was reviewed by the Office of the University Counsel and they concluded that the statement does not create any additional liability for senior Administrative (Unit Managers) or Finance personnel.
Internal Control Self Assessments
The Financial Controls and Accuracy Certification program is a key part of the University's year end audit process. To meet this timeline the Unit Financial Certification Statements and Questionnaire need to be completed and returned to the Department of Finance by April 30th to the attention of:
