The College of Graduate Studies administers an annual competition which provides graduate fellowships to students who are engaged in full-time study or research in a full-time degree program. The awards are disbursed from University budget funding.
Awards are made on the basis of merit and are open to any master's or doctoral graduate student regardless of citizenship or visa status. The value of these awards is reviewed annually. Each award covers a 12-month period beginning September 1, and is offered for one year. The awards are non-renewable and students need to apply annually for funding.
In order to be eligible, students need to have achieved a minimum GPA of 80% in EACH of the last two years.
Undergraduate students are not eligible to apply for this funding.
If you are eligible to apply for NSERC, SSHRC or CIHR funding, you are expected to apply in order to be considered for UGF funding.
CIHR (masters) NSERC & SSHRC applicants – your CIHR master’s, NSERC & SSHRC applications will become your UGF application. You do not need to complete a UGF application form.
CIHR (doctoral) applicants – please provide us with a copy of your CIHR doctoral application by the deadline date in order to be considered for the UGF competition. You do not need to complete a UGF application form.
It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the application is complete and includes all required documents. Late and/or incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
Application Procedures – Students Who Currently Hold NSERC, SSHRC or CIHR funding (Canadian and Permanent Residents)
If you currently hold Tri-Council funding, you will need to apply for UGF funding using the UGF application.
Application Procedure – Students Who are Not Eligible for NSERC, SSHRC or CIHR funding (usually International Students)
Please complete a UGF application form.
If you were eligible to apply for NSERC, SSHRC or CIHR funding, but did not apply – your UGF application will be deemed ineligible and you will not be considered for funding.
It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the application is complete and includes all required documents. Incomplete and/or late applications will not be reviewed.
We follow closely the criteria used in Tri-Council funding (CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC).
Please note that meeting the minimum eligibility requirements noted above does not mean that you will be awarded funds. We generally have substantially more applications than we can fund.
UGF applicants will be notified in May.
UGF awards can be deferred within the academic year (students can take up their awards in September or January) but cannot be deferred to the following academic year. Students who are unable to access their UGF award within the academic year must reapply to the UGF competition.
The UGF application form can be found here.
The UGF reference form can be found here.
