Application Procedures

Students apply for the Vanier Scholarship using ResearchNet, an online application system.  Students must complete and submit their entire application by  Friday, September 16, 2011 at 11:59 pm.

(There is no designation for "UBC Okanagan" so please select "UBC." )

The application deadline is firm and NO late applications can be submitted.

Applications submitted by students directly to one of the granting agencies, instead of through the University, will not be considered.

Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

To apply, you must:

  • contact your graduate program and advise the program that you wish to apply for a Vanier scholarship.  Your program should assist you in evaluating whether or not you should submit an application. (In order to be a competitive candidate, you would need to be in the top 5% of your class.)
  • provide all original and official transcripts to the College of Graduate Studies by the deadline:

 Friday, September 16, 2011 at 11:59 pm.

  • The transcripts must be in sealed envelopes directly from the issuing institution.  (We recommend that you request transcripts and have them mailed to your home address.  Do not open the envelopes!  If the envelopes are opened, then the enclosed documents are considered "unofficial" and cannot be used for the scholarship competition.)
  • If you are a current UBC Okanagan student, you will need to provide official UBC transcripts.  Printed copies of grades from the Student Information System cannot be used.

  • Request two reference letters.  The reference letters must be submitted electronically through ResearchNet.  (Please ensure that your referees are aware that they will need to submit their references electronically.)

  • Obtain a leadership reference letter.  This letter should be written by someone who knows you in a non-academic capacity and should state how you have demonstrated and will potentially continue to demonstrate leadership capacity.  (You will need to obtain this reference and upload it to your application.)

  • If you are completing your doctoral degree at the same university where you have completed a previous degree, you will need to provide a compelling rationale for your choice of institution in the Special Circumstances section of the application.
  • Submit a complete application to ResearchNet by Friday, September 16, 2011 at 11:59 pm.

Please note that applications cannot be edited once they are submitted.
