PLEASE NOTE IF YOU ARE USING A MAC COMPUTER:  Some Mac computers have problems with the pdf reference forms, i.e. completing and enabling the submission of the form.  We recommend Mac user try the alternate methods of submitting their reference (paper submission or via email).

REFEREES PLEASE NOTE:  You should receive a confirmation email indicating receipt of the form.

Applicants should provide each of their referees with a copy of the reference form. To save a copy of the form to your computer, right click the link below and download the form to your hard drive. Since the forms on this website are interactive and can be completed online by the user, we recommend emailing your referee a copy of this form or a link to this section of the website. References must be submitted directly to the College of Graduate Studies and never to the applicant. Electronic references will be considered valid only when sent from institutional email addresses (ie. john.smith@ubc.ca) directly to the College of Graduate Studies.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their referees complete and submit the required form prior to the application deadline.

1. How many references should I provide? 

 

 

 

 

The following programs require three academic references. Professional references may not be accepted for these programs:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Engineering
  • Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies
  • Mathematics
  • Nursing
  • Psychology

The following programs require three references, with a minimum of one academic reference:

  • Education
  • Social Work

Applicants may choose to provide up to two professional references; however, it is recommended that at least two references come from an academic source.

2. What is the difference between an academic reference and a professional reference?

An academic reference is provided by a college or university instructor, usually holding a PhD. The academic referee will be asked to comment, where applicable, on your academic preparation, originality, skill at research, industry, intellectual capacity, and teaching ability. 

A professional reference is provided by an individual who has worked with you in the field of your intended graduate study, usually in a supervisory capacity. The professional referee will be asked to comment, where applicable, on your academic preparation, practice competence, creativity, working relationships, work ethic, critical thinking skills, research skills, intellectual capacity, and teaching ability.
