Thesis and Dissertation Scheduling Timeline for Graduation
MASTER'S THESIS
The following dates ensure a student has sufficient time to complete the thesis process, which allows them to be considered for Spring Graduation.
Students may initiate the process at any time. However, to be considered for Spring or Fall graduation, the following deadlines must be met. If you have any questions, please contact Graduate Studies at 205- 807-8772.

Eight (8) weeks prior to the final deadline date the thesis and relevant documents must be submitted to CGS.
Once the thesis and relevant documents are received and potential defence dates, CGS invites the university examiner and upon acceptance forwards the thesis, obtains a Chair and confirms the supervisory committee members participating. |
Final date for student’s thesis defence.
This allows the student two weeks from the date of the examination to make any recommended revisions and to have the formatting checked and approved by the College of Graduate Studies.

Final date for Graduate Studies to approve the final dissertation.
Graduate Studies verifies program completion and submits the student’s name to Senate for graduation.

END OF SEMESTER PROGRAM COMPLETION DATES
Students who would like to ensure they have sufficient time to complete the thesis component of their program by the end of the semester to avoid tuition being assessed in the following semester* must meet the following deadline dates.
*Applies to students who have paid the minimum number of tuition payments required by their program.
