Health and Dental Plan

The UBCSUO Extended Health and Dental Plan is designed to provide many important services and cover expenses not covered by your basic health-care plan, such as prescription drugs, dental care and travel health coverage. All students are automatically enrolled in the program.

What's Covered?

The Extended Health includes:

  • 80% coverage of prescription drugs (including oral contraceptives).
  • Out of Province & Country emergency treatment.
  • Paramedical services such as massage and chiropractic services.

The Dental Plan has a maximum of $750 per benefit year and includes:

  • 80% of diagnostic and preventative procedures.
  • 70% of restorative procedures.
  • 50% wisdom tooth extractions.

*Please note that the UBCSUO Health Plan does NOT cover your Medical Service Plan premiums nor does it replace it.

Opt-Out Information

The Students' Union plan is mandatory for all UBCO Students. However, if you are covered by a similar plan through work or family (MSP does not count), you may choose to opt out. If you have other insurance, opting out is not mandatory, you may choose to coordinate your benefits over the two plans.

When entering your opt out information, be sure to list the insurance company providing the benefit,  (e.g. Blue Cross, DA Townley, Great West Life). Please enter your “Plan” number only, sometimes known as a “Group” or “Policy” Number.

Canada's First Nations Citizens, whose band covers their medical and dental expenses to the same or greater extent as the UBCO plan, need only list the band name and number in the appropriate fields.

It can take some time for your opt-out form to be processed and the relevant fees deleted from your student account. If you have paid the health/dental fee in error, the student account will eventually reflect a credit. To confirm that your opt-out information has been submitted, contact UBCO Enrollment Services at 250.807.9100.

If you’ve entered incorrect, incomplete or invalid information, the premium may not be re-instated.

You will automatically be opted out of BOTH medical and dental coverage unless you specify otherwise.
