For Volunteers

“Our main purpose in Ceremonies & Events is to ensure the graduates have a memorable convocation. We hope that you will join us and volunteer your time to help us achieve our goal, while also enjoying the graduate’s pride and joy in reaching their ultimate goal.”

The Ceremonies Office is looking for volunteers to help make the UBC Okanagan Convocation Ceremonies a memorable occasion for our graduates and their families. Both faculty and staff members will be needed in various roles.

Why Volunteer?

  • To see the University from a different perspective
  • To connect with the students and their families
  • To utilize your knowledge and skills

Volunteer Opportunities

Ushers: Hand out programs and direct guests to their seats. This is a very important role and we will need a lot of volunteers to help out.

Marshals: Lead both the student and faculty processions. Traditionally marshals have come from the faculty members but staff are welcome.

Golf Cart Drivers: Drive VIP guests with special needs to and from the gym and Student Services Centre in a 6-seater golf cart.

Volunteer Deadline

Interested volunteers should contact the Ceremonies Office.  E-mail erin.podmorow@ubc.ca or phone 79258 no later than Friday, May 22. You can volunteer for one or both ceremonies, depending on your schedule.

A Warm Welcome to Alumni Volunteers

Alumni are always welcome on our campus but there’s something especially poignant about having you here for convocation. To our graduating students, you are the future - just as, ironically, they are the same to you.

On June 7th, when you arrive on campus at your designated time, please go directly to the welcome table set up inside the Alumni tent in the courtyard. Someone friendly and helpful will direct you from there. You will have received prior confirmation of your specific role at graduation. Some of you will be pitching in with activities around the tent. Some will be involved in ceremonies and will need to be gowned and directed to your procession. The four main alumni volunteer roles are:

  • pinners (helping students with their gowns)
  • gifters (congratulating graduating students in ceremonies and presenting them with small gifts from the Alumni Association
  • greeters (mingling with students, family and friends in and around the Alumni tent, inviting them for refreshments and activities set up in the tent)
  • table coordinators (looking after activities set up in the tent)

For more information about volunteering for graduation, or if you have any questions about the volunteer role you’re signed up for, please contact Brenda Tournier.
