Learning Opportunities

WHMIS and Basic Laboratory Safety
This course is open to students, staff & faculty working with controlled products.  Upon completion, the participants will know elements of legislation necessary to be compliant with the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. They will know the symbols for the different classes of controlled products, and how to access the material safety data sheets to protect themselves while working.  The participants will also be able to apply proper techniques and good acceptable practices associated with handling and storing chemicals. This course is mandatory for UBCO staff working with controlled products.

BCGEU Okanagan Benefits Overview

Work Re-Integration and Accommodation Coordinator
Tracey Hawthorne is joining Human Resources as the new Work Reintegration and Accommodation Program (WRAP) Coordinator for the UBC Okanagan campus.

In this inaugural role, Tracey will be responsible for the roll –out and ongoing implementation of the WRAP program, our collaborative approach to illness, injury and reduced work capacity.  See www.ubc.ca/okanagan/wrap.

Tracey brings 25 years of experience in disability/illness management and rehabilitation and holds degrees in both kinesiology and physiotherapy. She has served on provincial committees including acting as chair for the Ministry of Labour’s Work and Wellness Committee. Tracey also brings established relationships with WorkSafeBC, disability carriers and community physicians. With her focus on wellness promotion and assisting individuals to “return-to-health”, Tracey is a great fit for the goals of the WRAP program.

I know that you will join HR in welcoming Tracey and drawing upon her expertise as, with her arrival, we change our practices regarding absence due to illness and implement the new processes under WRAP. MSP Rate Changes Announced
The Province of British Columbia has announced the rate changes for Medical Services Plan (MSP) effective of January 1, 2011 which are expected to occur January 1 of each year. The monthly premiums will increase by $3.50 per month for individuals and $7 per month for couples and families.  Effective January 1, 2011, the total monthly rates are:  single:  $60.50; couple:  $109.00; family:  $121.00. 

The employer and employee cost sharing percentage for calculating MSP premium deductions will remain unchanged.  For example, employees who pay 75% of the MSP monthly premium will continue to pay 75%, however the 75% will be applied to the adjusted monthly rate.  MSP deductions are taken one month in advance; therefore, the new deduction will be reflected on the December 31, 2010 pay advice for employees who pay the full or partial cost.

Benefits Change for M&P Employee Group Plan
Effective January 1, 2011, those enrolled with the M&P Employee group plan will be elegible for a new benefit.

The Health Spending Account (HSA) is a credit that you can apply to a variety of medical expenses that aren't covered by Extended health or dental plans.
