Breastfeeding Spaces

Breastfeeding FriendlyUBC’s Okanagan campus is supportive of, and acknowledges the family responsibilities of all of our constituencies, including students, staff, faculty and visitors. There are many aspects to this, including providing appropriate and welcoming environments for breastfeeding mothers.

The ability to breastfeed in public without harassment or censure is a right protected under both UBC’s Policy on Discrimination and Harassment and the BC Human Rights Code. UBC supports the right of women to breastfeed their children in a safe and comfortable environment that is free from discrimination or harassment, whether they choose to do so in public or in a more private location.

While breastfeeding in public is protected by law and women are welcome to breastfeed anywhere on campus, some women may prefer to breastfeed their children in a private location. There is a network of breastfeeding-friendly spaces across UBC’s Okanagan campus where a mother can go to breastfeed her child in a more discrete location. The locations are:

  • FIN 351B (private)
  • SCI 398 (private, please check-in with Deans' Office Sci 200)
  • ARTS 279Z (semi-private, check-in with receptionist)
  • Gym (semi-private, check in at equipment desk, lower level)
  • Fipke Building (FIP246C)
  • UNC (please check with reception at the Health & Wellness Office UNC337)
  • LIB314B (private please check with reception)
  • Administration Building (semi-private, check in with Human Resources, lower level)
