The relationship between hope and advance care planning
Presenter
Dr. Carole Robinson, Associate Professor, School of Nursing,
University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus
Abstract
Concerns have been identified in the literature that ACP (advance care planning), which involves frank discussion about end-of-life issues, has the potential to negatively affect hope. The concern leads to clinical tension between two ideals of palliative care: supporting hope and communicating truthfully. The presentation supports the position that the foundation of hope is not the issue; rather, how hope works is more salient to clinical practice.

Seizing the Opportunity of an Aging Population
Senator Sharon Carstairs, P.C.
Seniors are a rich and vibrant part of our country, but do Canada's policies and programs meet the needs of our aging population? The Senate of Canada's Special Senate Committee on Aging pursued that question, issuing a final report in 2009. Senator Sharon Carstairs, who Chaired the committee, will be in Kelowna Feb. 21 to talk about the findings.
"The impending reality of population aging presents a wide variety of complex challenges, ranging from financial security and retirement, to housing and transportation issues, to chronic diseases and health care needs," says Senator Carstairs. "But is also provides for us new opportunities for addressing these complex challenges in new, innovative and collaborative ways.
"Rather than be overwhelmed by the 'tsunami' of aging, we need to act now to seize the opportunities presented by population aging," she says.
Feedback
- Very interesting, government needs to bring in programs to assist the elderly with medical problems and assistance. Wonderful to hear a woman senator speak.
- Quiet, but effective speaker. Interesting comments proud we have women such as Sen. Carstairs and others in power who travel to speak on topics like ageism.
- Very interesting and knowledgeable lady. I am proud to have a Senator of her caliber fighting for the rights of the elderly.
- Excellent talk on the issues of aging and a warning that we are not prepared for all the folks coming along who will need services, medications, housing and social services. Most at risk are elderly women, First Nations and those with disabilities. She emphasized that we need to allow the elderly to move from one province to another (to be near family) and have their medication bills covered the same as in their original province. A gripping subject well-delivered.
