Novell Client Installation on
Personal Workstations and Laptops

Please follow the instructions below to install the Novell Client for Windows, allowing you to connect to UBC's Okanagan campus Novell file servers from your personal Windows workstation or laptop.

In order to login to the Novell Client you must ensure that you are:

  1. Physically connected to an Okanagan campus network port with a network cable, or
  2. Connected to UBC Secure Wireless, or
  3. Connected using the UBC O VPN service

Disclaimer: Use this software at your own risk.  UBC's Okanagan campus holds no liability in the unlikely event that your computer should become damaged during the installation.

Caution:  Before installing the Novell Client, ensure that you know what your Novell username and password are.  Without these credentials, you could potentially lock yourself out of your computer. Although not recommended, blank passwords will work with Windows, but you will still need your Novell username and password.


Windows XP/2000 Installation Instructions

Minimum System Requirements

This Novell Client supports the following Windows operating systems:

  • Windows 2000 Professional
  • Windows 2000 Server
  • Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Windows Server 2003 Server Edition
  • Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
  • Windows XP Professional
  • Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

For all platforms, the Novell Client supports only 32-bit versions of Windows. The Novell Client cannot be installed on a 64-bit version of Windows 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000.

IMPORTANT: The Novell Client might run but is not supported on Windows XP Home edition.


Minimum Network Connectivity Requirements

  1. Physically connected to an Okanagan campus network port with a network cable, or
  2. Connected to UBC Secure Wireless, or
  3. Connected using the UBC O VPN service

Installation Procedure

  1. Download the Novell Client from the IT, Media and Classroom Services website and Save it to your Desktop.

    Saving this file to your desktop will make it easier for you to install the program later.
  2. Save and close any programs open on your computer.
    NOTE: During the installation process, your computer will need to be rebooted and any unsaved data will be lost.
  3. Double-click the saved Application icon "UBC O Novell Client 4.91 SP4 English.exe".  This will start the installation process.  Please be patient as the installation can take some time.
    • Click on the Install/Upgrade button to proceed.
    • Ignore any Anti-Virus warnings.
    • Click on Reboot when the installation completes.
  4. When the computer restarts, login with your personal computer (Windows) credentials.
  5. When Windows finishes loading you will see a red "N"  in the system tray.  You can login by either right-clicking on the red "N" and selecting "Novell Login" or by using the shortcut in the Start Menu under Programs -> Novell (Common) -> Novell Login.  When prompted, enter your Novell username and password.

  6. Done! You have successfully installed the Novell Client for Windows.

Windows Vista Installation Instructions

Minimum System Requirements

The Novell Client for Windows Vista is supported on the following platforms:

  • Windows Vista Business (x86 or x64)
  • Windows Vista Enterprise (x86 or x64)
  • Windows Vista Ultimate (x86 or x64)

The Novell Client for Windows Vista is only for Windows Vista x86 and x64. This Client will not run on Windows XP, 2000, or 2003.

IMPORTANT: The Novell Client for Windows Vista might run but is not supported on Windows Vista Starter, Home Basic and Home Premium editions.


Minimum Network Connectivity Requirements

  1. Physically connected to an Okanagan campus network port with a network cable, or
  2. Connected to UBC Secure Wireless, or
  3. Connected using the UBC O VPN service

Installation Procedure

  1. Download the Novell Client and Novell Client Update from the IT, Media and Classroom Services website and Save the files to your Desktop.

    Saving these two files to your desktop will make it easier for you to install the programs later.
  2. Save and close any programs open on your computer.
    NOTE: During the installation process, your computer will need to be rebooted and any unsaved data will be lost.
  3. Double-click the saved Application icon "UBC O Novell Client for Windows Vista 1.0.exe".  This will start the installation process.  Please be patient as the installation can take some time.
    • Select the default location to extract the required files.
    • Accept the license agreement and click the Install/Upgrade button to proceed.
    • Ignore any Anti-Virus warnings.
    • When the installation completes click on "Close" - DO NOT reboot.
  4. Double-click the saved Application icon "Novell Client for Windows Vista 1.0 Update.exe".
    • Click the Setup button to begin the installation.
    • Click on “Restart Now” when the installation completes.
  5. When the computer restarts, login with your personal computer (Windows) credentials.
  6. When Windows finishes loading you will see a red "N"  in the system tray.  You can login by either right-clicking on the red "N" and selecting "Novell Login" or by using the shortcut in the Start Menu under Programs -> Novell (Common) -> Novell Login.  When prompted, enter your Novell username and password.

  7. Done! You have successfully installed the Novell Client for Windows.
