The Learning Commons

The Learning Commons is a space designed to support learning by providing access to academic resources, technology, and research support.

Computing & Connecting on Campus

fieldreadingroom

The Learning Commons is located on the main floor of the UBCO Library. It contains 103 personal computers, and nine Macs, equipped with research and productivity software.

  • Software available on Library computers. Look for Info Commons in the list of labs.
  • Schedule for other computer labs on campus.

The Learning Lab is located in Room LIB111. It contains 26 student-use computers, plus an instructor's workstation connected to a ceiling-mounted projector. This room is open for student use except when we are teaching library workshops.

  • Research Assitance Program Schedule (Fall 2010)
Using a laptop?  Connect to the wireless network on campus. Set up a secure connection or use the open wireless network and login with your CWL.

Printing & Photocopying

New Pay for Print System: There is a new one-stop solution to adding money to your pay-for-print account.  Located in the photocopier room, the new station allows you to login to your account and add money directly (coins and bills).  You will no longer need to add money to your card in the lobby and then go to a login station - it has all been consolidated into one station.  If you still have money on your student card we suggest you transfer the money off of it soon, the old stations will be removed later in the Fall (2010).

Two printers, three photocopiers and one scanner are available for student use. For instructions on double sided printing and other green printing tips, see our Green Printing Guide.

Fees for printing and photocopying: 7 cents per page (b/w) or 29 cents per page (colour).

Photocopy PIN Enter your student number and birth date (MM/DD/YY) to retrieve your 4 digit photocopy PIN.

Netstorage Save to your “my documents” (F: drive) on campus and then access your documents from home. Login with your student number and birth date (MM/DD/YY).

Scanning

There is one basic scanner available in the Learning Commons available for student use.  It is located near the photocopy room.  For guidelines on copying and scanning please visit the following copyright page.

Laptop Lending

20 laptops and 24 netbooks are available to borrow from the Library. Read our Laptop Lending Policies.

Computing & Connecting from Home

Connect from home – introducing EZproxy.

To get instant access, all you need to do is start your research from the UBC Library web site. No setups required!  When accessing a journal or database, EZproxy will automatically determine whether you are a valid UBC patron. If it cannot determine you are valid, it will simply ask you to provide (example screen shot) your login credentials (i.e. CWL or Library Barcode/PIN).

Netstorage Save to your “my documents” (F: drive) on campus and then access your documents from home. Login with your student number and birth date (MM/DD/YY).
