Courses Offered in Mathematics & Statistics
Mathematics is a powerful tool for solving practical problems and a highly creative field of study, combining logic and precision with intuition and imagination. It is more than just numbers and rules for calculating with them. The basic goal of mathematics is to reveal and explain patterns - whether the pattern appears as electrical impulses in an animal's nervous system, as fluctuations in stock market prices or as fine detail of an abstract geometric figure.
The ability to simplify complex situations through abstraction and systematic reasoning is a great asset. However, math is not just an abstract, academic pursuit. There are many career opportunities for math students. For example, currently a math background is one of the best ways to get into an Education program, as there is a shortage of Mathematics teachers at the secondary school level. There are also teaching positions at the university and college level. The business sector also employs Mathematics grads, especially in the actuarial field, investment and banking. For those with an interest in computer science, there are also many career opportunities for people with knowledge in mathematics and computers, especially in the software industry (systems analysis, software engineering, computer programming).
This program provides students with a solid grounding in the mathematical sciences including mathematics, statistics and computer science. While maintaining a strong core in mathematics, the program allows students to emphasize mathematics, statistics, computer science or any combination of the three. Computer mathematics and statistics systems are extensively integrated throughout the program.
A graduate of this program is prepared for further study in the mathematical sciences, or to enter into a career in business, education, government, industry and financial institutions. Each student must consult with the Academic Unit Head in their first or second year for advice in planning their third and fourth year courses.

Graduates of this program are prepared for direct entry into careers in actuarial science, government or finance. Many graduates go on to graduate studies, professional secondary teaching programs, or other professional programs.Concentrations are available in Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Statistics.
Students hoping to engage in undergraduate research or who wish to pursue graduate school should consider the Mathematics Honours Program. This program will allow students to participate in directed studies under the supervision of a Math professor.
Mathematics and Statistics have ties to nearly every field of research at the university. Students looking for a strong background in this field in order to apply it to their Major area of study should consider taking this program.
