Dawson College vs. Lethbridge College

Le résultat: 79-75
Gagnant: Dawson College Blues

Game OneThe second-ranked Dawson Blues took on the seventh place Lethbridge Kodiaks in the kick-off game for the 2010 CCAA Women’s Basketball Championships at UBC Okanagan.  Dawson came in as the favourite after upsetting defending champion Cegep de Sainte-Foy in the Quebec provincial championships, while Lethbridge earned a wild card berth after finishing as runner-up at the Alberta provincials.

Although Dawson was the favourite, it was apparent early on that it would be an even matched game as both teams swapped leads in the early on with the Blues coming out ahead by the end of the first, 21-19.  Their lead would be short-lived as the Kodiaks would come on strong early in the second led by rookie Guard Paige Shannon to take a three-point lead, before the Blues would exert their force to take a 37-33 halftime lead.  Shannon was big in the first half scoring 18 points for Lethbridge, while making 3 of 4 three-point attempts.  Marilene Lapierre was key for Dawson scoring 12 in the first half, while Amencie Mercier provided a pesky defensive presence for the Blues with four steals.

The second half would prove to be a rollercoaster ride as the Blues came out strong to ride an 18-4 run in the first half of the 3rd quarter to give them a 55-39 lead and apparent control of the game.  However, the Kodiaks Kayla Lambert would provide the emotional spark to get her team back in the game as her fiery play would lead a 14-4 Kodiak run to close out the quarter, and close the gap to 55-53.

In the fourth, Lambert would continue to control the flow, knocking down a three-pointer while being fouled, then sinking the ensuing free-throw to complete a rare four-point play and bring standing cheers from the Kodiak supporters.  This would incite the Lethbridge team to another 14-4 run to give them a 71-64 lead midway through the fourth, and force Dawson to take a timeout.  The timeout would do the trick as the Blues would charge back to tie the game at 71 when a desperate Lambert tumbled following an attempt to block a fast break lay-up, injuring her ankle and forcing her from the game.  This would effectively halt any Kodiak chances and the Blues would continue an endless march to the charity stripe leading to a 79-75 victory.

Paige Shannon was named Player of the Game for the Kodiaks on the strength of her 30 point, 8 rebound performance, but Anne Mercer was also strong putting up a 14 point, 10 rebound double-double.  Lapierre would receive Player of the Game honours for the Blues following her 21 point, 5 rebound game, but Dawson would also get a strong performance from Serginha Estime who provided 17 points and 13 rebounds.

The Dawson Blues will play tomorrow at 6:00 P.M. against either SAIT or Mount Saint Vincent in the semi-finals to see who will go on to play for the title.  The Kodiaks will play the loser of that game tomorrow at 1:00 P.M.
