The team ranking system was way off in picking the top two teams as #5 Sainte-Foy and #6 Mount Saint Vincent square off in the championship, however, it was bang on in predicting the seventh place game, as the seventh place Lethbridge Kodiaks face the eighth place Camosun Chargers in the battle to keep out of last place.
Lethbridge was looking good coming into the game as their two injured stars, Paige Bowman and Kayla Lambert were dressed to play in their final game of the season. Bowman even started the game despite hitting her head after going down hard in her team's Friday game. Lethbridge coach Brad Karren expressed how Lambert was questionable to play, but Bowman had been given the go-ahead but would be taken from the game if she felt any dizziness.
It looked to be an even-matched affair in the early stages as the score was tied at 10 midway through the first quarter. The Chargers took an advantage midway through as six Camosun players scored baskets in the first to give them a 17-12 lead at the close of the first. Paige Bowman showed little signs of negative effects from her injury yesterday as she tallied 8 of her team's 12 points in the frame.
The Chargers would continue to hold an edge in the second quarter as they led 23-19 at the midway point as their star player Chelsea McMullen started to heat up. Camosun would edge their lead to 28-23 midway through the quarter, but it would be all Lethbridge from this point onward as they would end their half with a 10-0 run to take a 33-28 lead into the break, their first lead since they led 10-8 in the first. Anne Mercer had a huge first half for the Kodiaks providing 13 points and 10 rebounds for her team, while Paige Bowman paced her team with 14 points. McMullen led the Chargers with an 8 point, 6 rebound half.
The Kodiaks built on their lead in the third taking a 48-34 advantage midway through the frame. However, the Chargers would spend the remainder of the quarter chipping away at it as they closed the gap to 54-44 by the start of the fourth. Lethbridge would out-score Camosun 21-16 in the third.
Both teams would come out gunning in the fourth, scoring a combined 12 points in the first two minutes as the Kodiaks hung on to a 59-51 lead. With Kayla Lambert back in the game for Lethbridge, they had one more weapon in their arsenal, but the with tandem of Bowman and Mercer hitting on all cylinders Lambert's usual leadership wouldn't be needed. The Chargers would pull to within seven midway through the quarter to make it 63-56, but that is as close as they would come as Bowman and company put the game away to pull out a 76-64 victory.
Kimber Gale would be named Player of the Game for Camosun after putting up 15 points and 10 rebounds, although McMullen put up 22 points and 12 rebounds, Gale was more efficient taking eight less shots and burying three 3-pointers. Anne Mercer was named Player of the Game for the Kodiaks after a big 22 point, 16 rebound game in which the 6'1 post player displayed her inside/outside skills by knocking down both her three-point attempts. Paige Bowman was on fire from outside for the Kodiaks hitting 5 of 7 three-point attempts for a 23 point performance.
This concludes the season for both teams as the Lethbridge Kodiaks finish 7th in the nation, while the Chargers are 8th.
