The OSI is an interdisciplinary, inter-faculty institute dedicated to basic and applied research, scholarship, and creative works relevant to issues of long-term sustainability within the Okanagan region and beyond. Membership derives from interested and actively engaged faculty and staff at UBC Okanagan, richly complemented by an array of partnerships that activate and leverage capacity and expertise beyond the University.
The objectives of OSI include the generation of information, knowledge, methods, and processes that assist regions in planning sustainable development (broadly conceived and defined) while also advancing formal academic knowledge and practice in a broad array of cross-fertilizing disciplines and professions that inform sustainability as a nexus of inquiry.
OSI was officially approved by action of the UBC Okanagan Senate in December, 2006. Members of the Activities and Strategic Directions Steering Committee have since been elected from the UBC Okanagan faculty. Dr. Keith Culver, Director of the OSI, manages all OSI operations. The OSI Director reports to the Provost (Okanagan), Dr. Wesley Pue. It is through such broad, pan-University participation and interest from all Faculties extending from Engineering through the Arts & Sciences to Creative & Critical Studies that the OSI will create its unique identity and relevance to issues of regional sustainability.
