Exterior Land-Based Research Opportunities and Approvals on UBC Campus Lands

Exterior lands on UBC’s Okanagan campus are available for research and teaching purposes where proposals are relevant to UBC’s academic mission, and where confirmed on a case by case basis as feasible through a planning and operations review.

In early 2010, the University expanded its main campus land base  through the  purchase of additional neighboring lands to the  west .  The University's intention in acquiring these lands,  previously known locally as the "Tutt Lands", was to increase the University's land endowment so that this land can be used for future teaching, learning and research, and  for university community-building and long term financial strength. Development of the "Tutt Land" will be governed by local zoning, and by the UBC Okanagan Master Plan to be updated in 2011-2012.   These new lands now provide considerable opportunity for land-based research.

Faculty members are invited to apply to use the new lands for research.  The process is identical to that already in place for research and academic use of all campus lands (including the main campus) meadows and forests.  All projects will be assessed first on research and academic merits, and if successful will then be cleared through a planning land-use regulations and operations review.  The Tutt lands in particular are largely undeveloped and unserviced. Road access is  limited.

This process has a rolling deadline. Please apply to the Research Services Office at any time. The results of the application will be made available six weeks after submission. Please see the links below for further information.
