Student Practicum Insurance – Pay Now
Students can now pay for their Student Practicum Insurance online. The cost for this required insurance is $7.00 per student per academic year.
Social work is an incredibly important profession with field education through the practicum experience being a critical element of educating and preparing social work students for the challenges and demands they will face in their future careers as helping professionals.
At the UBC School of Social Work (Okanagan Campus) the field practicum is a requirement of both the BSW and MSW degree programs. Social work students are placed in community agencies or organizations for a period of social work practice learning and professional development. Bachelor of Social Work students complete two practica and Master of Social Work students complete one practicum experience. In the practicum, students focus on integrating the theory, knowledge, and skills taught in their courses with learning from doing practice at an agency in the community. The practicum earns course credit and is evaluated on a Pass/Fail basis.
The School is proud of its relationships with community partner agencies in our Okanagan Valley catchment area that provide a diverse array of quality practicum opportunities for students. Fourth year BSW students can also apply to complete a distance placement.
The School of Social Work will work with students to find practicums that meet their educational and career interests. It is possible for the third year practicum experience to be taken anywhere in the Okanagan Valley. With special permission, students in fourth year practicum may complete their placement outside the Okanagan Valley in Canada. Regardless of preferred location, the School of Social work cannot guarantee specific placements or locations and students must work with the School throughout the placement process. Students are responsible and accountable for finding their own means of transportation to and from practicum placements.
The School of Social Work reserves the right to approve an agency or institution that provides placements for student practicum, and to change any placement assigned to a student. The student has the right to be informed in writing of the reasons for any change in placement. While the School accepts a responsibility to provide a sufficient number of practicum opportunities to serve the needs of all registered students, a student may be required to withdraw from a practicum course if none of the available practicum agencies will accept that particular student. Practicum dates are established by the department and will be announced to students at the beginning of each term.
