Social Work Student Union

Hey all!

Welcome to the 2011/2012 school year, and welcome to your Social Work Student Union web page! On this site you will be able to access information about all the events that will be taking place within the School of Social Work and find out when the next SWSU meetings will be. Meetings will be happening bi- weekly with the first one on Monday September 12th, 2011, at 3:45 pm.

The mandate of your Social Work Student Union is to promote cohesion between Third year, Fourth year and Master level students. Build supportive relationships among students, facility and the community will encourage strong success for future years. The Student Union seeks to be involved with community events to inspire awareness and give back to the community. It is our mission to maintain a non- judgemental, supportive, and welcoming student union to encourage participation among students.

We are also going to make an effort to establish partnerships with community organizations such as the YMCA, Living Positive Resource Centre, The United Way, and many others. It is important for us to get our names out there and build the reputation of the best program at UBC. Not only will this give us a collective chance to make our program known in the community, but will also help students to build a professional reputation for themselves!

So again, welcome to, or welcome back, this is most certainly going to be a fantastic year, let’s make it count!

Day of Caring (November 2011)

Day of Caring Photo

Okanagan campus social work students were helping special needs individuals and their families at the United Way Day of Caring, held in the last week of November.

A United Way Day of Caring is a partnership between organizations to volunteer time and support for a day. Employees or volunteers come together, develop team-building skills and make a difference in the community. The Day of Caring was organized by the School of Social Work’s Student Union and held at Arion Therapeutic Farm in Kelowna.

Students Angie Walsh, Brittney Stanway, Ania Chwala, Jordan Oostenbrink, Karlena Bonita, Kate Harling, Chelsea Watts, and Richelle Collins were on-hand to help prepare for a Winterland event held the following weekend -- which included pony rides, face painting, gingerbread cookie decorating, crafts, farm tours as well as a visit and photos from Santa Claus.

Day of Caring (January 22, 2011)

About 20 of the social work students came out over the weekend for the first ever School of Social Work + United Way + Stepping Stones Counseling Group Day of Caring. We painted and decorated kids bedrooms for a family who had experienced domestic violence.

There were about 10 companies that donated to the project, including Subway, PCL Construction, Starbucks, Home Depot, Grand Openings, and Benjamin Moore. There was some really good learning for the students being in the family home and discussing the dynamics of abuse with the group of therapists who were working alongside them.

The students were a fantastic crew and did a superb job - there were some pretty happy kids who came home to beautiful new bedrooms where there had been bad memories before.
