Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Admissions

How to Apply

BSW application deadline for the September 2012 intake is February 29, 2012.

(If space is available, late applications may be considered. Please contact the school for further information at ask.socialwork@ubc.ca.)

To apply to the program follow these steps:

1. Make sure you meet all admission requirements. 

2. Register on-line at the UBC Okanagan website to be admitted into the Bachelor of Social Work (Okanagan) program. Students who are new to UBC Okanagan (not currently a student)  need to apply at the You @ UBC website. Full instructions are available here. Current UBC Okanagan students can apply through their Student Service Account under the Registration tab by clicking Change of Degree Program / Campus. Make sure you select Bachelor of Social Work (Okanagan) as your program of choice.

3. Complete and submit the BSW Supplemental Application form directly to the School of Social Work.

4. Submit a current resume with your Supplemental Application form.

5. Submit at least two references using the BSW Reference form.

Admission Requirements

 Please review the information on program admission requirements carefully. To be admitted to the program, students require: 

  • completion of 60 credits of general university studies, which may include transferable arts or science credits completed within a human service, social service, or other relevant diploma or certificate;*
  • 6 English credits at the 100 level, including two of the following: ENGL 112, 113, 150, 151, 153;
  • a minimum grade of 72% in each of SOCW 200, SOCW 201 (or equivalent);
  • successful completion of at least 3 credits of human development (lifespan) e.g., SOCW 255, PSYO 220, or SWPP 355 OLA;
  • a minimum grade average of 68% calculated on the last completed 30 credits; and
  • submission of the BSW Supplemental Application form which includes submission of a résumé and at least two references. The supplemental application will be considered in addition to academic performance in determining admissibility.

General University Study Credits

Applicants who have completed a two-year human service, social service, or other relevant diploma generally do not meet the 60 credits of general university studies requirement. These students are encouraged to to apply for admission to the Arts and complete the required credits. Students may then apply to the BSW program upon completion of the required 60 general university credits.

Below is a list of courses that have been assessed as equivalent to UBC (Okanagan Campus) SOCW 200 (Introduction to Social Work Practice) and SOCW 201 (Introduction to Social Welfare) and for which transfer credit is granted:

Nicola Valley Institute of Technology - SOCW 200A & 200B
Northern Lights College - SOWK 200 and 201
Okanagan College (formerly OUC) - SOCW 200A & 200B
Selkirk College - SSW 160 & 161
Thompson Rivers University-(Open Learning -Distance) - SOCW 2061 and SOCW 2121
Thompson Rivers University - SOCW 200A and 200B
UBC (Vancouver Campus) - SOWK 200 and SOWK 201
University of Victoria - SOCW 200A & 200B
University of Northern BC - SOCW 200 & 201
Vancouver Island University - SOCW 200A &200B

Below is a list of courses that have been assessed as equivalent to UBC (Okanagan Campus) SOCW 255 (Human Development) course and for which transfer credit is granted:

General Requirements

Criminal Record Checks

Prior to the start of classes, all admitted students must present a criminal record check completed by the Solicitor General of BC no more than three months prior to the start of term.

Applicants and students who have a criminal record may have their offer of admission withdrawn or be required to withdraw from the program. Failure to submit the required documentation by the specified deadline may result in the withdrawal of an offer of admission.

Prior to participation in any community-based programming, all students must present either 1) a current criminal record check completed by the Solicitor General of BC no more than three months prior to the date of course initiation, or 2) a ‘Criminal Record Check Statutory Declaration’ confirming that no changes have occurred relative to the criminal record check on file with the Faculty.
