For organizations looking to hire co-op there are sources of funding available within Canada.

Many of these funds can be applied to assist with covering some or all costs of employing a co-op student, particularly if the student is working on a research project within your organization.

The following is a list of programs. Please contact the agencies directly for additional details on eligibility and the application process.

Summer Career Placements (SCP)
Summer Career Placements (SCP) is a federal HRDC wage subsidy program that enables public, private and not-for-profit employers to create career-related summer jobs for co-op student participants.
HRDC has a March application deadline for hiring students to work between May - August each year.  

Canada Business - Services for Entrepreneurs
Canada Business provides government grants, loans and financing available for your business

Federal Government Funding
Natural Science & Engineering Research Council's - Industrial & Undergraduate Student Research Award (NSERC-USRA)Maximum value of the award is $4,500. A travel allowance may also be granted. The employer must supplement awards by at least 25%. Students must be enrolled in an honours natural sciences or engineering program and have completed two academic terms at the time the award is held. Students must have obtained a cumulative average of at least second class (B or 70%) over the previous year of study. All awards are subject to final approval by NSERC and the availability of funding.

Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP)
The IRAP (Industrial Research Assistance Program, part of Canadian National Research Council) assists small and medium firms (less than 500 employees) in solving short term scientific, engineering, and technical problems as well as undertaking long term strategic R&D projects.
NRC may contribute toward the co-op student's salary if they participate in an approved R&D project.

Scientific Research & Experimental Development (SR & ED)
The Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) Program is a federal tax incentive program to encourage Canadian businesses of all sizes and in all sectors to conduct research and development (R&D) in Canada.
Qualified claimants can apply for SR&ED investment tax credit for expenditure related to numerous operation costs, including wages paid to a co-op student
